10 Reasons to Visit Cordova, Alaska this August

4/4/2022

Cordova is a quaint coastal town located between Anchorage and Juneau, just east of Prince William Sound. Here I share with you 10 reasons why you should join me in this amazing destination this summer.

1) 14-17 hours of daylight!

We'll need to reapply sunscreen at dinner time but there'll be so much more time to photograph and explore.

3) Sea Otters!

Cordova is the sea otter capital of the world! The largest population of sea otters resides here and they pup year-round.

2) Ecosystem Diversity

Explore a temporate rainforest, spruce-hemlock forest, muskeg (boreal wetland), inter-tidal, marine, and island ecosystems.

4) Trek a glacier

Trek along the ancient glacier ice and explore jagged crevasses along the way.

5) Visit Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center

The AWCC cares for Alaska's injured wildlife through husbandry, conservation, education, and research. While many are returned to the wild, those who remain serve as ambassadors for the preservation of their species.

6) Birds!

Trumpeter swans, Dusky geese, oystercatchers, harlequins, pigeon guillemittes, glaucous-winged gulls, kittiwakes, and sea ducks including several species of mergansers, scoters, and goldeneyes are just a few of the birds we should see.
7) Salmon

Watch king, sockeye, coho, or pink salmon swim up the Copper River to spawn.

8) Tidepools

One of my favorite marine ecosystems to explore is tidepools for colorful sea stars, anemones, sea cucumbers, chitons, and more.

9) Kayaking

Kayak the calm waters of Orca Inlet and closely explore crystal blue glaciers. Maybe we'll even see an Orca or a whale.

10) Hiking

Hike through forests, along the shoreline, and along the Copper River. As a bonus, you'll get to log at least 5 hikes towards your 52 Hike Challenge 2022.
